Description

Product Description

Chances are that just under a nearby rock, you’ll spot a roly-poly pill bug. Encourage a child to take a close look, and introduce a fascinating creature. Gently pick it up and watch as it rolls into a ball and unrolls to take a walk. This cousin to lobsters and crabs sheds its crusty skin and will tickle your hand with its 14 (count ’em!) wiggly legs. Awaken a sense of wonder in a child with the Next Time You See series from NSTA Kids. The books will inspire elementary-age children to experience the enchantment of everyday phenomena, such as pill bugs, fireflies, seashells, and sunsets. Free supplementary activities are available on the NSTA website. Especially designed to be experienced with an adult—be it a parent, teacher, or friend—Next Time You See books serve as a reminder that you don’t have to look far to find something remarkable in nature.

I had a kiddo with special needs in my PreK classroom who just was intrigued with animals! This book was able to help increase her language to talk about the roly-poly bugs she was finding in her yard and be able to talk more about them with us at school. The photos are absolutely brilliant and the text is informative and easy for young children to understand. An incredible resource!!

Fascinating Look at Pillbugs

My grandsons love this book! It is full of fun facts and photos of pillbugs, or in our parlance, rollypollies. I bought his book along with the RollyPolly Farm to support their fascination. It’s a hit!

So glad I bought this book! My K students are always bringing “Roley-Polies” into the classroom and I have never owned a Pillbug book that I could share with them. I am very choosy about books and don’t like ones that are too wordy. This one is perfect!! It (in my opinion) has just the right amount of facts and nice, up-close pictures. I love that is has a page dedicated to pictures of creatures from the same animal family; I LOVE that it opens by asking questions (what do you notice about you pillbug? Does it have ears? How does it feel in your hands? etc.). I also LOVE that it has a page of activities to do with your pillbug at the end of the book. This is a simple yet genius book for a primary classroom. So happy about it :)

This book is informative and well written. It is straightforward enough for grade 1 and in-depth enough for grade 3. There are two things I would change. First of all, though the photos are large and detailed, they are kind of all the same. Just up close shots of a gray pill bug, or kids holding a gray pill bug. A bit more colour and variety would be nice, like maybe photos of different species of pillbug from around the world which are different colours, or habitat pictures or something. The other thing I would change is terminology. It says pill bugs are not bugs...but “bugs” is not a well-defined term (unless you are talking about the insect order hemiptera, the true bugs, which it isn’t.) What is a bug, and what is it about being a land crustacean that doesn’t qualify? Also, kids might know them by other names (woodlice, potato bugs etc) which deserve a mention. Anyhow it’s really a worthwhile book and I’m being very picky about those other things. I will be keeping it and using it in educational programming.
